Broken Tears Episode 10

Thank you all so much for following up on this story from the beginning. Your comments and advices have been noted. I really appreciate that you like my write ups. This is the final episode of Broken Tears and I hope it has been worth it all the way...

Maryam left the office feeling all queasy. She'd been putting some finishing touches to the project they had. She and Saffiyah had been working with their dad's friend at his company ever since they finished their service. Saffiyah had left the office earlier to go shopping. It was their birthday and they just wanted to do something on their own. Idris couldn't be there,he was away on a business trip with some other lawyers, and Dupe was on her way to their house, so she had to hurry and get home so their friend wouldn't be locked out. She shielded her eyes from the sun with the back of her hand. The sun was unusually hot that afternoon, she was scared she was going to get sun burns. She brought out an umbrella and opened it, she couldn't let anything happen to this skin of hers, she cherrished her skin so much! She got into her car, turned on the A.C and sighed, she was going to have a long, cold bath and then lie in the bath-tub for a while. Yeah... She needed that treat! She had been a good girl! She laughed and drove off...

Maryam smiled as she hung up the phone, Saffiyah was on her way to the airport to pick Dupe up so that gave her enough time to lie in the tub! She felt like a movie star! She hurried to her bathroom, turned on the water and went to her room to take her clothes off. She turned on her deck and played her favourite mix, switched on the A.C, turned off her room light and walked back into the bathroom, by then, the tub was almost full, she stepped in and it felt good. She immersed herself fully in the water and closed her eyes as the coolness of the water soothed her tense muscles.

"Saffy its so nice to see you! Mum and dad said to wish you girls happy birthday, and I have lots of goodies and your favourite chocolates! Just wait till we get home!" Dupe was so happy she was with her friend once again, after a long time. "My dear I really missed you too! That's why I insisted on coming to pick you up from the airport." They got into the car and headed home as they talked and caught up on what they had missed.

Maryam opened her eyes, startled. She must have fallen asleep in the tub, the water was warm now. She dragged herself up and stepped out of the tub and a strange feeling came over her. She grabbed her robe, put it on and opened the door to her room, the lights were on! She was so sure she had switched them off! Wande Coal's 'Ololufe' was playing on her deck and that song wasn't on her play list! Someone was in the house! She quickly dried her body with a towel, slipped into a bum-shot and a crop top and walked towards the door, she reached to carry her hand drier incase things got messy. She got a strong urge to call Saffy, but she shoved it off, she didn't want to scare her because she was so sure Saffy was driving home now with Dupe, and what on earth was keeping them long?! She rolled her eyes as she stepped into the hallway leading to the living room. She tiptoed slowly and then she stepped on something and almost jumped. She looked down and saw it was a note, she picked it up and opened it; "Ayanfe..." (The one I choose to love.) She didn't recognise the handwriting as it was designed, she moved on slowly. There were red roses on the floor that made her heart melt. Who could be behind this? Idris wasn't around... So who? She saw another note and picked it up; "Ife mi, Ore mi, Oyin mi." (My love, my friend, my honey.) She laughed softly, "This is crazy!" She thought to herself. She dropped the drier and continued walking, still careful not to make any sound. Another note; "Ever since the day I met you in the plane, you left a puzzle in my heart... Only you can put the pieces together." Okay! It was Idris, but where the hell was he? She was thrilled already, and was blushing seriously. Just at the entrance to the living room, she saw the last note, under a bottle of wine... "What shall we toast to? Your birthday or...?" Or what? She was anxious! Or what? She yanked open the door and half ran-half walked into the living room and all of a sudden the lights came on; "SURPRISE!!!!" Her heart thumped! Everyone was there! Idris, Saffy, Dupe, her parents, Idris' parents, his sister ... Saffy ran forward and hugged her and they stood together, hand in hand as the rest sang happy birthday song for them. After that Idris walked forward, reached for something in his pocket and went down on one knee. Maryam was overwhelmed, she smiled down at him, knowing what he was going to say... He opened the tiny box to reveal a very beautiful diamond ring and held it up to her; "Maryam... I'm almost going ga-ga so I hope you don't mind if I talk a bit faster than normal." Maryam laughed and shook her head as tears rolled down her cheeks. "I might not be the most perfect man that you've ever met, but in every aspect, you get me. I might not be the sweetest person to you but you've added spice to my life, I might not be the most handsome or dashing guy to have your love but my eyes have had the opportunity to behold such extremely beautiful sight through these years, please do me the honour of having all the beauty inside and outside, to myself for the rest of my life... Maryam, will you marry me?" Maryam smiled through her tears; "Yes! Yes my love! I'll marry you! Over and over again!" He brought out the ring and put it on her finger, got up and gave her a long passionate kiss! "Woooooooooooooooooh!" Everyone cheered and clapped and the party started. Just then it started to rain heavily outside and it made the party more interesting! Maryam picked up the wine; "Idris, the toast! So what do we toast to?" She asked. "Oh right!" he answered; "First you girls have to cut the cake, then we'll toast." She quickly dragged Saffy to where the cake was and they were going to cut it on three! Everyone counted; "One... Two..." There was a knock on the door. Maryam sighed; "Now???" Saffy smiled at her; "Don't worry bride-to-be, I'll get it." They both laughed and Saffy hurried to see who it was. She got to the door, opened it and shock had her rooted to a spot...

He had just gotten into the country two days before. The first call he got was from Debbie, saying she had to speak with him and it was very urgent as she had to confess something to him. He had been confused at first but after he listened to her, it all made perfect sense, he never got to find out what she was doing in his class back in high school. He planned to find his love immediately he stepped into Nigeria but what he heard from Debbie, made it more pressing than it was. Time had past, year after year, making him wonder if he would ever find his jewel. This morning he took the first flight into Abuja, he was going to find her today or die trying! He met with Debbie to get her address, it was her birthday so he went into town to get her something. What was she like now? What did she like? He felt as if he had never met her before! Debbie had told him all he wanted to here, she was still very much single. He got to a store, got a bunch of roses and a black, lovely gown that he knew would fit her perfectly well! He had money, a good job, lots of love to shower on her but still one thing left... His tribe! He couldn't change that, but he didn't want her to have any reason to say No to him again. Not again! He brought out a piece of paper, and wrote something down, when he was done, he handed it over to the store owner; "Please could you be kind enough to help me put down the yoruba version of what's in that note, or please find someone to help me do it. Its a matter of life and death!" The lady collected the paper, read through it, smiled, picked up her pen and wrote down the yoruba version. He was so happy! At least, this would make her know he was really serious about her! As he drove to her place, it started to rain heavily, so he had to drive slowly, as he didn't know the way. He kept stopping to ask people and in no time, he got soaked in the rain as he had to come down to ask for directions because nobody wanted to be in the rain but he had no choice! Finally he got the place, parked, got the flowers and the rest of the boxes and got out of the car, into the rain again, and walked to the door. Once there, he took a deep breath and knocked. His heart thumped loudly as he waited, was he prepared for this? How would she react? Did she still feel the same for him? The thought of Saffy not loving him anymore made his mouth bitter! He looked down at the wet flowers... Would this turn out to be fine? He sighed. And just as he was about to knock again, the door opened and there she was....

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Saffy looked into those eyes, those eyes she never stopped seeing in her dreams, those eyes that once gave her comfort, those eyes that once had pain in them because of her... All those years kept rushing back, she remebered him in school uniform, remembered him taking her further maths, remembered him telling her they would be together forever. Jamal... There he was, so real and soaked from his curly hair to his toes! She looked down and saw flowers, bells went off in her head, then she saw a wrapped box, but she didn't care what was in it. She looked up at him again; say something! Her heart screamed. He reached into his pocket and brought out a paper and started to read the most awkward yoruba message she had ever heard, but she understood; "Ife mi, mi ti n wa e tikpe! Mi de ti ri e ni sin, ma a de ku si bi ti oo ba farabale gbo nkan ti moni lati so! ... Errrmmm..." He folded the paper and took a step closer to her; "Look Saffy, I'm not really good at this. I can't change the fact that I'm from the north. But please you mustn't let tribe decide our fate." He went down on both his knees; "Saffy I have come a long way, I'm probably going to have a mild fever, but I don't care. I am ready to show you that I really love you even if it means going to learn your language, I will!" He stretched the flowers to her and the box, and she collected them. "Happy birthday Saffy!" He reached into his shirt pocket and brought out a small box and Saffy's heart went out to him; "Saffy from today, I want to be there when you wake up every morning, when you go to sleep every night, I want to share every moment with you! I'll be there for you through whatever it is, just name it! Joy, Success, Labour..." The last word made Saffy laugh through tears. "Please I would be really grateful if you let me be the one to give you a birthday kiss every year. Saffy please I want to be the man in your life, for life! I want to be the father of your children. Saffy please I want you to be my wife. When I think about you, the word 'wife' sounds like the sweetest thing in my ears..."
"Jamal..." Saffy sniffed and laughed a little; "I'll marry you, only death can stop me from marrying you! I love you so much Jamal." She pulled him up and he held her very close to his heart. He would never let her go again, not now, not ever! She heard whispers behind her and she heard Maryam telling everyone; "That's the Jamal.. That's the Jamal!" Saffy pulled him into the house and introduced him to everybody. Idris picked up a glass cup and spoon and hit it; "Hear hear! Let's toast! To the newest couples-to-be including myself. May we be happy, and fruitful and live together forever, and I hope forever is a very long time..." "Amen!" Everyone echoed. The twins cut the cake and everyone started to eat and drink and merry. Dupe looked at her friends with so much love in her eyes. She was so caught up in the moment that she didn't know when a guy walked towards her till he touched her waist; "Hey beauty, my name is Mark." He stretched out his hand and she shook him, and then he smiled; "I guess I'm the luckiest guy here tonight, I don't see any ring on your pretty finger, correct me if I'm wrong, you're single."
"Yes I am. My name is Dupe" She smiled. He exaggerated a sigh of relief and continued; "Would you go out with me sometime? Dinner..?.." Dupe smiled again; "Of course..."

Broken Tears Episode 9

Aisha walked the beach, holding her husband's hand, the girls were away on service and they had taken the day out to just unwind and talk about everything. Their life together was blissful, though they had their moments but they couldn't think of anywhere else they would rather be, besides where they were now... She tightened her hold on Ahmad's hand, she loved him; she had never for once, or for any reason let her love for him falter. But she was worried, ever since her third year, Saffy had been somewhat distant. She hardly ever wanted to talk about anything personal. Maryam on the other hand was always talking about Idris and they were looking forward to meeting him. She talked to Maryam about Saffy and Maryam had confirmed her fears, telling her Saffiyah had a bad relationship in their 2nd/3rd year in school, it had ended in a very hurting way and Saffy had sworn never to have anything to do with any man again. Aisha was confused on what to do, her only option was to talk to her husband about it; "Ahmad," she looked up at him. Ahmad looked into his wife's eyes and knew immediately that something was wrong, he took her to a nearby palm tree, sat down and pulled her down on his laps; "what is it dear?" He asked. She sighed and he took her hand in his and patted it; "Talk to me baby." "Its about Saffy." "And what about Saffy?" "She's been acting strange for some time haven't you noticed anything?" "I noticed that she's a bit distracted lately but I just thought you would handle it. Do you know what its all about?" "Well, Maryam told me that she had a bad relationship in school and swore never to have anything to do with men again." Ahmad's Patience snapped; "What? You mean someone toyed with my baby's feelings? Why didn't she say anything? I would have gone there to teach the brat a lesson!" "Calm down dear, it happened 3 years ago. All we have to do now is try and reach out to her." Ahmad sighed, he was angry, it was written all over him. "Maryam also said that Saffy was bent on finding our choice and not hers and that's how she got herself into that mess!" Ahmad gave her a blank look; "So this is about the tribe thing isn't it? I've told you Aisha,I don't really mind the tribe thing at all, as long as they're believers I'm okay. We'll just pray for God's guidiance and leave everything to Him." "Ahmad don't start shifting blames, we agreed on this together for our children from the start, so we are both at fault." "Aisha, I'm not blaming you for anything. Okay, we'll figure this out together." He pulled her to his chest and patted her hair; "we'll be fine honey, everything will be fine."

     xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

"Are you at the airport yet?" Saffiyah struggled with her boxes and tried to stay on the phone with Maryam; "Yes I am, I just got there. When I get to abuja I'll call you okay. I have to go, I'm having difficulty with these crazy boxes." "Okay dear. See you soon." Maryam was so excited, she just came into town from kano and Saffiyah was coming from Lagos. They had gone one full year without coming back home, they wanted to be on their own for that period and it was kind of refreshing. Idris had promised to come over that afternoon, and mum and dad were looking forward to meeting him. She had to start preparing for both of them. She had missed her sister so much. And she really hoped that this past year had also made her loosen up.

      xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Maryam left the supermarket and walked towards her car when she heard a voice behind her; "Maryam! Maryam!" She turned around and saw who was running towards her, it just had to be.... Debbie! She managed a smile; "Heeeyyy Debbie! Ah ah! Longest time. How are you?" They hugged; "I'm fine dear, I'm so happy to see you again! How is Saffiyah?" "Saffiyah is very fine thank you. You look good. Turkey really treated you well." "Hmm my dear, thank you o! I just came back a couple of weeks ago, for my service. Did you hear about Jamal? He was the best medical student of his set in Turkey, he's now in India, there was this one time his parents tried to fix him up with one hausa girl and he refused all the way, but they went ahead to plan the wedding anyways, but Jamal never showed. He just buried himself into his studies, hardly ever noticed the girls that kept flashing the green lights in school, it was that bad... I guess he never really got over Saffy. Ha! High school love. Na wa o!" Maryam looked at Debbie like she could see through her, she hadn't changed. "Well, like I said back then, that's on your account, eerrrm I have to run along now Deb, let me give you my number so you can get through to Saffy okay? I have a very busy day ahead." She gave Debbie her number, she couldn't give her Saffy's number with the way she was running her mouth about the exact thing that had hunted her twin all these years. She got into her car, and drove off. Debbie stood there for a while... Lost in thoughts... On her account... She had felt guilty all these years for doing what she did. She couldn't bring herself to tell Jamal that she was the one that dropped that note. Yet he still helped her through some courses in school. Such a good heart he had. If only he knew... Maybe he would have hated her! She remember what he said once when she talked to him about Saffy... "I don't really know what went wrong between us, but if I ever find her again, I would make sure I leave no doubts when I tell her my love for her is beyond this life!"....

Broken Tears Episode 8

Idris was done with his project work and his supervisor had approved all his chapters, He had defended and now, he was preparing for Law school. He called his parents that morning and told them about it, they were so happy and they prayed for him and told him to bring Maryam to meet them soon. Maryam didn't know he told his parents about her already. He loved her so much and he wanted something permanent with her. Just the thought about her made his heart flip-flop. He had to see her.

      xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Maryam left the hall smiling, she just wrote her last paper for the session, and it was very okay. She walked towards Saffy's department to wait for her. She was relieved to see her walking out of the hall as well, she waved at her to come over. "How was it?" She asked. "It was very okay, I answered all the questions to the fullest." "Good, let's go home. I'll be meeting Idris soon,he says he wants to celebrate my birthday eve with me, maybe take me out or something before the main birthday tomorrow." She told Saffy with a happy smile. "Wow that's so sweet Maryam. Idris really cares about you..." There was an awkward silence between them for while and Maryam tried to reassure her sister; "Don't worry Saffy, Gaffar might surprise you! You'll see!" Saffiyah laughed and they kept talking as they walked home.

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Maryam and Idris talked while she got ready to go out with him, she picked up her make up brush to do some finishing touches; "Where are you taking me to tonight?" She asked; "There's this new place close to school gate where they sell nice dishes, I went there yesterday to check it out. You'll love it, I promise!" Saffiyah came out of the room wearing her nighty. Maryam looked over at her curiously; "Saffy no date for you? Whatsup?" "Nothing jor! Gaffar said he's preparing for a presentation tomorrow, so I'll just stay in and watch movies." Idris looked over at her; "You can come with us o, its your birthday eve too you know." "No dear, you guys have fun. Thanks though." She opened her laptop and turned it on. Maryam finished with her makeup, picked up her bag and left the house with Idris.

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

"I don't know why we can't get a cab. Let's walk further a little, maybe we'll get bike at least." Idris and Maryam walked for a while, and as Idris was about to flag down a cab,Maryam heard a familiar voice from a joint nearby. She turned; "Idris hold on." She followed the voice; "Guy I swear that chic baaaaaad! I just dey follow the waist as the beat dey go! Mehn! That party rock yesterday abeg! We just dey high anyhow! Shayo dey waste! I even get one party tonight self. Abeg control that chic for me now." And then an unfamiliar voice answered; "why you no collect her number yesterday? You go just dey fuck up anyhow!" "Guy no be so, I just dey carried away. And all of us dey high! Na this morning she commot from my place self. You know as e dey be now!" As Maryam and Idris approached the joint, the smell of weed clouded the air. Idris already knew who they would find, he had seen him countless times getting wasted, and one time he tried to caution him but got shunned instead. As they got to the entrance, he was so surprised at the calmness in Maryam's voice as she confirmed her suspicions; "Gaffar," she said with a sarcastic smile; "How's that presentation prep going?" Gaffar quickly got up and threw the remains of what he'd been smoking on the ground, stepped on it and quickly walked towards them. Maryam held out a hand, stooping him on his tracks; "Say whatever you've got to say from there, don't ruin my perfume." "Maryam err whatsup with you? Errmm see, its not what you think...." "I'm not thinking anything Gaffar, not yet. Does my sister know about this?" She asked, waving her hand around, knowing he understood what she meant by that gesture. He laughed nervously; "Maryam she doesn't have to know you know." Maryam's control snapped; "How dare you! You think my sister is a fool? Listen, you have just one option, come out clean with my sister or I will." With that she turned around and left the place. "Can you imagine that idiot?!" She said to Idris; "that guy is a junkie! I knew it! I tried to talk to Saffy but she wouldn't listen!" "Calm down Maryam, at least now you have proof that he's no good. Just make sure you're there for her when she needs you okay?" "Of course I will. Thanks for bringing me out tonight. I wouldn't have known." "Common Maryam, let's just try and get a cab."

   xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Saffiyah rolled over on her bed and opened her eyes. She smiled, it was her birthday. She took a deep breath and stretched. Thoughts of Jamal washed over her, she remembered him saying he would be there to give her a birthday kiss every year for the rest of their lives.  Funny how time flies though. She thought of Gaffar,  then she picked up her phone and dialed his number to wish him the best in his presentation . Her heart thumped when a feminine voice answered; " Hello who is this? "  " This is Saffiyah and who is this? " "This is Gaffar's girlfriend!  Any problem?" There was a little struggling on the other end and the next voice was Gaffar's; " Saffy whatsup?" Saffiyah was pissed.  "Gaffar what's the meaning of this? So you have another girlfriend right? Why??" "Saffy listen uhm... I've been wanting to talk to you for a while now. This.... thing between me and you. .. its not working for me.  I'm sorry you had to find out this way,  I didn't plan for it to happen like this, it's just. .. well l'm not feeling it anymore and I'm very sorry okay.  Take care." Saffy was breathing heavily now, all she could manage to utter was; "what?"... The line went dead. She sat up on her bed, shaking from head to toe., tears burning her eyes and cheeks, she took a very deep breath and with all her strength, she screamed; "Maryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaam!"....

Broken Tears Episode 7

"Saffy please eat now, you have to eat so you can take your drugs." Maryam tried to feed her sister who had been ill for almost a week. Saffiyah was always falling ill, she was the number one reason why they didn't stay in the hostel anymore. She wasn't used to the whole hostel lifestyle and so little things got to her. "I can't eat much Maryam, I don't even like the smell of food! I'm just tired!" Maryam stared at her sister sternly, she thought about what was going on in her mind... She wondered if Saffy was really in love with Gaffar, because the big head was never there. Anytime her sister fell ill, he would come when she had gotten better and tell them about how he'd been busy with school work, like they were drop outs and didn't know what school was like! Its been 4days and the human being hadn't showed. Of course she knew the kind of guy he was, but her sister wouldn't listen to her, she had found what her parents wanted and that was final. She always tried to talk to Saffy about it but she would shove her off, pointing out that Idris was from kwara too, and that Maryam was judging her boyfriend unfairly. She said yes to him in their year 2 and in second semester Saffy let him deflower her, what was that her flimzy reason then ooo... Oh yeah! Girls were disturbing him and she didn't want him to leave her so she gave herself to him, because she believed he would love her more. Bullshit! How could Saffy be so naïve?? Dupe was really pissed at her and they didn't speak to each other for two weeks! Maryam hated Gaffar's guts! She knew the kind of guy he was! While she was busy looking for a guy like Jamal, her sister was loving a fool because he was from kwara! Gad! She didn't say yes to Idris because he was from kwara. Infact she didn't know until she helped him print out a slip he wanted to submit in school! And it didn't make her love him more or less! Infact if Idris fucked up today, God help her, she would leave him! Just to prove to her sister that it wasn't all about the tribe. The door opened and Dupe walked in with Idris; "Maryam I'm so sorry for taking time, I had to use the ATM machine and the queue was a bit long. Has Saffy been able to eat?" "No o, I'm still begging her." Idris bent to feel Saffiyah's temperature; "You have to eat something dear, you've really lost weight, and remember the doctor said, if you don't eat, we should bring you back for injections, we both know you don't want that, or do you?" Saffiyah rolled her eyes and searched for an excuse; "I just don't want food! I think I would even prefer snacks or something." She knew they would have to go out again to get snacks, and everybody was tired, so she had won! Or so she thought, her heart shattered when Idris reached for his bag; "Oh that's okay, I got you meat pie and Coke, the meat pie is hot, and the coke and cold. So you'll eat now and take your drugs and then we won't have to go for injections. Do we have a deal dear?" "Yeah." Saffiyah answered dryly. Maryam smiled and sighed; "Thanks so much Idris. You saved the day." Idris smiled; "its okay dear, I got the rest of us fried rice, I hope you girls are ready to eat, because I am dying of hunger!"

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Saffiyah sighed as she stared at the pile of handouts on her table. She had four make-up tests to write, the lecturers had considered her because she had been a serious student from her year 1. That fever really weighed her down. She couldn't wait to graduate and have a house of her own so she could sterilize everything she came in contact with. She wondered how Maryam and Dupe rarely fell ill. She picked up the first handout to read and then her phone rang; "Hello dear" she answered, it was Gaffar. "Saffy whatsup? How are you doing?" "I'm fine, how are you too?" "I'm okay, I just finished one test now. I'm coming to see you. Is there food? I'm seriously hungry." "Errr there's no food but you can come I'll make you something." She dropped her handout and went into the kitchen to prepare something for her boyfriend, she thought of what to cook, they hardly allowed her into the kitchen since she fell ill, saying she had to regain her strength. She lit the stove and started to heat water, noodles would do. After a while, she felt a little dizzy and held the edge of the kitchen table to steady herself and just then she heard her sister's voice behind her. Wrong timing! "Saffy what are you doing? And why do you look so pale? Ah ahn! I left rice in the cooler for you now, why are you cooking again?" "Its not mine Maryam, I've eaten the rice, I'm not hungry. But Gaffar is coming over, and he says he's hungry." "Gaffar is coming over, and he says he's hungry, and this place looks like a restaurant? Does he even remember you were ill? And you came into the kitchen to cook for him, with all the heat from the stove, see how pale you're looking. Saffy what is wrong with you? This guy didn't even give you paracetamol when you were sick and you're here almost killing yourself for him! Saffy think! He's supposed to even take you out and buy you something to eat, not this crap you're doing!" Just then there was a knock on the door. Maryam turned around to go check who it was but Saffiyah grabbed her arm, knowing what would go down if it was Gaffar; "Maryam please, just let it go. Please." Maryam stared at her sister for a while, she was so pretty, and it made her heart melt to see her doing all this for an idiot! She stumped out of the kitchen, opened the front door and almost walked through Gaffar, leaving him at the door with a confused look on his face.

Broken Tears Episode 6

.".....and after then,he got scholarship to stud
medicine in Tturkey and we couldn't even talk
before he left. I haven't heard from him since, I
know he tried to get hold of me in school to talk
but I made it impossible. I thought it would be
better but I'm really not happy..." Saffiyah started
to sob as she narrated her story to Dupe. Dupe
pulled her close and held her and said soothing
things to her. Maryam just sat at the far end of
the bed, with a blank look on her face. She hated
to see her sister cry, she took care of every situation
but there was nothing she could do about this. Her
sister had been devastated after Jamal left for
Turkey, she wish things had gone differently for
Saffiyah. Jamal was a good guy! Their school has
a link with a university in Turkey, every year any
student that wanted to study medicine and had the
best result would be awarded a scholarship to
study in Turkey. And during their year, it had to be
Debby! That tramp is now in Turkey! And Saffy is
here crying her eyes out everyday! She got up and
went over to her laptop, turned it on and opened her
mail, there was a new mail from the University
they all applied for. She got in, she checked for
Saffy and Dupe, they both got in too. Dupe was to
study Law, Saffy Electrical Engineering and she
was to study Computer Engineering. She broke the
news to them, and she was glad it lifted Saffy's
mood a little. She just hope she would meet
someone good enough to make her forget about
Jamal. She really wanted Saffy to be happy....

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Unical was a very beautiful school. There were so
many lovely features they saw even before they got
to the school. Maryam was so happy that they
were together again after two years, they were
back in thesame school with Dupe. It would be
better for Saffy, at least they would both make
her happy every way they could. They got to the
hostel area, Dupe and Saffy were room mates
while she was in the room next to theirs. They
dropped their bags and went out to take a tour
round the school before retiring to bed. They strolled around
and talked and laughed, then they came accross a
very beautiful garden, they all sat and talked
while they ate their snacks. Maryam got a call
from an old school friend and she had to get up
and walk a bit farther from them because the
signal was bad. She got to a tree and rested her
back on it as she talked, after a short while, she
heard something behind her, she turned a bit to
check and saw nothing. The hair on the back of her
neck stood and she knew someone was definitely
behind her. She shivered, and dropped the call, she
knew it couldn't be Saffy or Dupe because she
knew the fragrance of the perfume they had on,
she couldn't move, fear had her glued to a spot,
the person was close to her now,she could sense
it,she paused, took a deep breath and with all the
guts she had, she turned around.....

"Maryam is taking so much time, I wonder where
she is.. I can't even see her." Saffiyah said
worriedly. "Yeah I guess she should be done with
her call already, let's walk around and see if
we'll find her." As they were about to stand up,
they heard foot steps behind them and before they
could turn around..., "Look who I found!" Saffy
turned around and recognised the face she saw,
standing beside her sister was the guy from the
plane! "Wow, its you! Its so nice to see you again,
what are you doing here?" He smiled; "I go here,
I'm a Law student, 300Level. Its so nice to see you
again too. My name is Idris Maleek." He stretched
out his hand and Saffy shook it; "This is our friend
Dupe. She's a Law student too." She introduced
Dupe and he shook her hand too. "You girls
shouldn't be out at this time, it could be dangerous
you know, I caught Maryam off-guard a while
ago." "Dang!" Maryam replied stubbornly; "I
would've punched you in the face!" They all
laughed and Idris walked them to their hostel.

The next morning they all left the hostel to
commence registration. Saffiyah really hoped and
prayed that things would be a lot easier for her
now. She got to her department and brought out her
credentials and entered the HOD's office. There were
four other student there so she had to wait, she
went through her credentials and discovered one
was missing, she quickly went through her bag but
it wasn't there, she started to sweat. She was so
sure she put everything in her bag before leaving the
hostel. She quickly got up and went outside, she
looked around but didn't find anything, she started
to panick when she heard a voice behind her;
"Looking for this?" She turned around and came
face to face with a good looking guy, holding up
her form. "Where did you get that?" "I saw you
bring out some papers from your bag and one of
them fell, obviously you were unaware of that, but
the wind started to blow it away so I ran after it
and brought it back." "Oh that's so nice of you,
thank you very much." She collected it from him
and wanted to go back to the office but he stood his
ground; "Are you a freshman?" "Oh, yes I am."
"Okay, may I know your name? I'm Gaffar, in
this department, 200 Level." "My name is
Saffiyah." "Okaaaay Saffiyah, how can I see you
again, can I have your number pleeeeaaaase?"
"Alright." She gave him her number and they said
their byes. Then he stepped away and she went
back into the office. Later in the day, the three girls
met for lunch and that was the kick off of theiir
campus life....

Broken Tears Episode 4

Wow! Seasons greetings everyone! I've been getting messages about this story, everyone wants to know what's going to happen between Jamal and Saffiyah... I appreciate that you all take time to read my posts, thank you very much. But I dunno y y'all feel reluctant to post the comments here instead of bbm and. whatsapp. Its all good tho. Let keep reading.......

"Saffiyah what are you writing?" Maryam looked over at her sister from where she was sitting in the room. They were alone at home, their dad had gone for a meeting earlier that day and their mum travelled the day before. Saffiyah had been distant and disturbingly quiet and she was worried. "Say something Saffy, I don't like the way you've been acting since we got back." Saffiyah sighed, scribbled something into the paper, pulled herself off the bed and handed it to Maryam. Maryam looked at her suspiciously but collected the paper anyway,her heart beat raced as she read through what turned out to be a letter;

    "Jamal...
I really do not know what to say or how to start. I dunno where all this wud lead, but I think we should stop whatever it is we have started. I am scared, n I don't want my parents trouble especially my mum. Its not ur fault that you're from Adamawa and I'm from Kwara, but maybe sometime in the future,ul understand and probably find a better person. We r still too young to even understand it now. I'm sorry, and I love you. ... Saffy"

Maryam laughed shakily; "what the hell is this Saffy?!" She asked her twin sternly. "Why would you want to do this to that guy? Oh for God's sake, stop being modest! I have had boyfriends and you haven't,so I know something real when I see one! Why do you think I stopped hanging around with guys recently? I see the way he looks at you Saffy, I have never had anyone look at me like that! Saffy don't throw this away because of mum and dad!" All the while Saffiyah was sobbing; "maryam please stop this okay? Mum would even kill me if she finds out I have a boyfriend, but well it just happened and now I have to make it right! And no matter what you do or say, I'll give him that letter!" Maryam was pissed at that point; "Very well then, but count me out okay? I'm not gon' help you deliver that letter to him. You'll have to do it yourself!" She walked out on her sister angrily, like seriously! Too young! Mum will be mad! Really! At what age did mum get married?! If she had Jamal to herself there was absolutely nothing anyone would do about it!

Saffiyah sat at her desk in class, lost in thoughts. She jumped out of fear when her class mate tapped her; "wow, you scared me Debby!" "I'm sorry I have been calling you to borrow me your economics note but you weren't answering. Whatsup? Why are you moody today?" Saffiyah sighed and told Debora everything, Debby was a good friend of hers, when she just came into the school, she helped her with notes and assignments, but Maryam didn't like her, she said Debby just wanted people to like her and she would do whatever it took to get attention! "Wow Saffy, but you two are so good together, everyone envies you! Did you talk to your mum about him?" "What? My mum? She would kill me! She would tag it infatuation, plus I'm only 15, I'm just confused. I don't know if this is real, but it feels so real. I have a note I want to give him, but my sister wouldn't help me give him,and I can't do it myself." Debby smiled at her; "I'll help you, if that's what you really want." Saffiyah thanked her, gave her the notebook she asked for and also the letter, Debby got up immediately and was off to Jamal's class and Saffiyah watched her with a very heavy heart. Immediately Debby walked out of the class, Maryam got up from the corner she had been watching them from and followed her, making sure Saffy didn't see her.

Debby got to Jamal's class and thankfully it was empty, probably they went out for a practical or so. She went over to Jamal's seat and opened his bag, slipped the letter in it and hurriedly turned around and yelped when she came face to face with Saffiyah's twin, almighty Maryam whom nobody dared to compete with in anything; "Oh Maryam, I didn't know you were there." She said, shivering. She wanted to walk away but Maryam blocked her way completely with her stance. Maryam smiled; "Debby," She started; "So, you are the break up piece yeah? I hope you know my sister isn't happy with this decision she made, that's why I refused to help her drop that letter, you haven't only succeeded in helping her drop that letter but also you have helped her shatter her happiness and Jamal's and until they get back together, you'll live with that guilt." With that she stepped back far enough to see what was going on outside. Debby turned around to go over to Jamal's bag to retrieve the letter when Maryam stopped her; "I wouldn't do that if I were you." Then she stepped out, out of sight. Debby walked towards the door and bumped into Jamal as he was about to enter his class. He was curious and wanted to question her presence when his other classmates poured into the class talking untop of their voices and before he could do anything, Debby was gone. xxxxxxxxxxx

Jamal yawned and rolled over on his bed, he'd been reading all night. This WAEC tension wasn't helping matters, he had to read and re-read! He thought of Saffiyah, he wondered what was happening with her. Ever since they resumed from the short break she'd been acting weird. And he'd been so busy with school work and all that he hadn't had time to really talk to her. He sighed and carried he's chemistry note, he rolled over and held the book above him,the moment he opened it, a folded piece of paper fell on his face. He picked it up and flipped it to the other side and immediately recognized the handwriting he saw, just one word ... "Jamal."

Aisha sat in the living room having juice and watching TV with her husband, the girls were in the room, reading for their exams. She was about to tell her husband a joke she heard on the radio earlier that day when Maryam walked in; "Mummy, I have a question about something that's been bugging me for a while." Aisha looked up at Maryam curiously, looked over at her husband and sighed, looking at Maryam again; "What is it dear?" Maryam continued with so much confidence; "I want to know why we can't marry any other tribe apart fr......" "Common shut your mouth!" Her mother cut in; "where is that coming from?  You should be studying for your exams and you're here questioning me about marriage at 15! Will you get inside now before I lose it!" Maryam shrugged and walked away. "Aisha! You shouldn't have done that now, that's unfair. If they can't talk to you about issues like this, who would they talk to? It is things like this that make children fall prey to little things they should know about." Aisha frowned; "they're too young to be thinking of such." Ahmad laughed; "how old were we when we got married? These children need us at this stage of their lives, so we have to be there for them, get up let's go to their room." He got up and stretched out his hand, she put her hand in his,got up and walked with him to the girls' room.

"I told you not to ask mum that question, now see!" Saffiyah chided Maryam. "Was that the reason why she scolded me like that? As if it was an abomination to ask. Who are we supposed to ask if not them? Mtchwww!" "Calm down Maryam, she was probably in a bad mood. You know how mum gets about issues like this." Just then, there was a knock on their door; "Can we come in?" Their father called out. "Yes daddy" they answered in unison. They came in and sat with the girls on the bed. "Maryam. I'm sorry for snapping at you like that when you came in, I shouldn't have. Forgive me?" "Okay mummy." Maryam answered. "Thank you. The question you asked is a big one but I'll answer it anyway. Marriage is a lifetime thing, once you're in, you're in for better or worse. We all have different cultures and traditions, and its better to stick to what you're used to. Before a child gets married, its the parent's duty to find out all the necessary things about the partner's family to know what they're going into and to decide if its a good idea or not. They'll have to know about the characters they have, what they do and don't do, the kind of diseases or illness common in that family among other things like epilepsy, convulsion, madness and things like that. In most cases like ours, parents insist on intra-state marriage to make it easier for us to find out the necessary things we need to, marrying from another state entirely would make it difficult or even impossible for the parents to do anything, and so most people get married and become unhappy for as long as the marriage lasts, and that's the cause of broken homes in some cases. There are many reasons but to your understanding, I picked out little to tell you. And I do hope you understand my darlings?" "Yes mum." It was Saffiyah who answered, Maryam just stared at their mum blankly; "So girls how is studying going." Their father's voice jolted Maryam back to reality; "Good! Studying is good. Thanks for telling us about this." She answered with a smile.

       xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Saffiyah sat on her chair in class, revising her note before her first paper when a junior student walked towards her; "good morning senior Saffiyah, senior Jamal said he wants to see you." Her heart thumped. "Okay, tell him I'm coming soon." She closed her book and got up, she looked over at her sister who smiled and winked at her. Saffiyah rolled her eyes and left the class.

Jamal was a bit shaky, he couldn't believe what he had read in that letter and so he had to see her! It didn't take long before she walked into his class, he moved and she joined him on the seat. He stared at her for a while and she couldn't look at him, she just stared at her hands on the desk and after a while all he could manage to say was; "Why...?" Saffiyah sighed, glad that he broke the silence and also disappointed that she had to answer that question. "Jamal.... I really can't explain this okay? Its just so complicated plus we are still very young to think about anything serious. So I think we should just go our separate ways till we are old enough to decide what we want." Jamal was dazed, he just stared at her mouth as the words fell out. "Saffy, .... Don't do this... Please." "Jamal I'm scared, I'm scared of doing something stupid so I think that's the best thing to do and I'm sorry. Please forgive me okay...?" She had tears in her eyes and he really wanted to wipe them away but a teacher came in; "Take your bags outside and let's get ready for this paper." Jamal turned around to carry his bag and when he looked back, Saffiyah had left.
